About the speaker

Dr. Huerta has led many trans-NIH programs advancing team science, interdisciplinary research, and large-scale, open, digital biomedical research and technology initiatives including the NIH Human Connectome Project, the NIH National Database for Autism Research, and the US Human Brain Project, which helped create and establish the field of Neuroinformatics. Today he is advancing, developing and harmonizing aspects of data science and open science across NIH through a variety of roles including as chair of standing trans-NIH task forces and coordinating committees. He is also providing strategic leadership to realizing the future of National Library of Medicine as a platform for biomedical discovery and data-powered health. Dr. Huerta’s research background is in systems neuroscience; his undergraduate and doctoral work was completed at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, he was an NIH postdoctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University, and on the faculty of the University of Connecticut Health Center before joining NIH’s National Institute of Mental Health in 1991 and moving to the National Library of Medicine in 2011.
