Springer Nature and Scientific Data are happy to announce they will be supporting the Research Parasite and Research Symbiont Awards in January 2018.

These awards for exemplary sharing of data (Research Symbiont Award) and secondary analysis and reuse of data (Research Parasite Award) are excellent examples of rewarding researchers for best practice in research data and we are proud to be able to play a small role in making them a success.

The Parasite awards, given annually, recognize outstanding contributions to the rigorous secondary analysis of data. This practice of secondary analysis plays a key role in the scientific ecosystem: conclusions that persist through substantial reanalysis are expected to be more credible; and analyses that extract more knowledge from underutilized data make the practice of science more efficient.

As Isaac Newton wrote to Robert Hooke in 1675: “if I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” The Symbiont Awards seek to honor modern giants. Traditionally, data sharing was challenging and expensive, so research proceeded by sharing completed findings. Our culture in science and medicine has been built on the value of completed stories.
